The publishing team are offering the game for free through the end of February, but it comes with a few rather unpleasant strings attached. It turns out that there is spyware bundled into the demo version which will automatically sign users up for an upgrade to Crysis 3 if they so much as try to run the game on pirated software. The malware also collects various file hashes and process details which can be used by ‘Crysis 3’ publishers Valve Software to crack down on piracy. The bundle includes a ‘crysis.exe’ file which is actually just a renamed version of the game’s launcher, so it’s not technically an ‘executable’. This means it has no other function than silently downloading the malware to the PC without any other input required from the user. Using an anonymous internet connection, I tested the Crysis 2 demo with two different antivirus applications. Both came back clean, proving that this trojan did not pose any immediate threat at all to my system. The things did raise some concerns, however, regarding how Crytek could potentially use them down the road. What if the company started selling the collected information in bulk to other publishers for example? How would they go about convincing people to opt into such a service? It seems that no one at Crytek has given any thought to these concerns, which makes this move even more perplexing.
